Tarot Del Toro

NZ$45.00
Limited availability

Movies and TV shows are such a comfort and a sentimental form of art - so when the aesthetic of my favourite movies makes its way into a tarot deck, you better believe I’m there. And no doubt, sometimes, its not a good combo, but sometimes it hits that sweet spot and becomes a deck you can’t put down.

Tarot Del Toro is one of those decks that I could spend all day with so easily - especially on a cold, dark winters day/evening in front of the tv curled up under a blankie. The art style is absolutely ‘my jam’ and the themes in the deck recall Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy II, Crimson Peak, The Strain, The Shape of Water, The Devil’s Backbone, Pacific Rim and Mimic vibes exquisitely.
The artworks for the illustrations on the cards are engravings which adds so much more depth and texture and meaning to the cards.

The deck embodies the spirit of the Tarot of the Marseille with the minor arcana cards being pips - for me this does not detract from the deck. Often we are so hungry for specific illustrations for each card, but I like the freedom and space that pips can provide in a reading. And I absolutely love how the minor arcana cards have been represented in this deck (Wands, Goblets (cups), Blades (swords), Discs (pentacles)).

This deck is a mass market deck, but I didn’t realise this when I first went searching for it. So the bonus of an affordable and darkly beautiful deck has got to be a good outcome!

There are other decks that Tomas Hijo has illustrated, and they will always have a home in my personal collection whatever they are. And of course, I will be sharing them with you here in the MoonAmaia collection wherever I can - ‘cos that’s how we roll!
(Note: Jim Hensons Labyrinth has to be my all time most watched movies - and Tomas Hijo illustrated the Labyrinth tarot deck also - it is available on the MoonAmaia website too).
